New Zealand's education system described in detail in here and here
Even though foreign languages have been part of the New Zealand curriculum since 2007, the subject is not compolsory for students. In the past, schools used to offer one or various foreign languages: French, Japanese, Spanish, German and Chinese. Besides foreign languages, Maori, along with English, is taught as an official language, as well as other languages from the Pacific Islands such as Samoan. Only secondary schools have specialized teachers.
